Small things count

If the small things are good the big things will be too.

Welsh actor Anthony Hopkins once made a series of ads for a high street bank applying the word ‘big’ to the bank, its services, his fee level and the number of branches. Simultaneously, the same bank was entering an extensive cost cutting exercise which was reducing branches, staffing levels and to all intents and purposes customer services. The only thing that was ‘big’ was the size of the gaff. Hilarious in a kind of sadistic way but reassuring that even the big boys can get ‘it’ so badly wrong.

But what is ‘it’? This mysterious component we all need to make our business, service or ad work? One thing we need is a genuine passion for detail – a recognition of the importance of small things. If the small things are good the big things will be too. Small things make the difference between really living and just existing. Do you agree?
